How to Order Your Texas Driving Record Online (And Why You Need It)

If you're taking a defensive driving course to dismiss a traffic ticket in Texas, there's one more thing the court is going to ask for: your official Type 3A driving record. The good news? You can get it straight from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) website for just $12 — no middleman, no markup.

Here's exactly how to do it.

Why Do You Need a Driving Record?

Texas courts require you to submit two things when dismissing a ticket with a defensive driving course:

1. Your course completion certificate
2. Your certified Type 3A driving record

The Type 3A is the only record type Texas courts accept for ticket dismissal. It's your complete, certified driving history — accidents, violations, license status, all of it.

Some third-party sites sell this same record for $20–$25+. You don't need to go through them. The state provides it directly at txapps.texas.gov for $12 total.

Before You Start: What You'll Need

Have these four things ready before you begin:

• Texas Driver License number
• Date of birth
• Last four digits of your Social Security Number
• DL Audit Number — this is printed on the front of your Texas driver's license (it's a long number, sometimes labeled "Audit" or "DD")

Step-by-Step: Ordering Your Record

Step 1 — Go to the DPS Driver Record Portal

Head to the Texas DPS Licensee Driver Records page: 👉 txapps.texas.gov — Licensee Driver Records

You'll see the official Texas DPS welcome screen. This service is provided through Texas.gov, the official state website.

Click Continue.

Step 2 — Check Your Print Setup

The next page walks you through system requirements before you log in. Make sure:

• You have Adobe Reader version 9 or higher installed (your driving record is delivered as a PDF)
• You're using a supported browser — note that Microsoft Edge is not supported; Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and IE work fine
• Pop-up blockers are turned off in your browser
• Your printer is connected (if you plan to print)

There's a Print Test Record button on this page — use it to confirm everything works before you pay. The test file password is 1234. If the test PDF opens fine, you're good to go.

Check the acknowledgment box and click Continue.

Step 3 — Log In with Your License Information

On the login page, you'll enter:

• Your Texas Driver License number
• Your date of birth
• The last four digits of your Social Security Number
• Your DL Audit Number (found on the front of your license)

This verifies your identity with the state. Once submitted, you're logged in and taken to the record request page.

Step 4 — Select Your Record Type

You'll see several record types listed. For ticket dismissal purposes, you want:

Type 3A (Certified Complete Driving History) — Certified version of Type 3. This record is acceptable for Defensive Driving Course (DDC).

Make sure Type 3A is selected. Then enter your mailing address in the Address Information section below (even if you plan to receive it by email, the system still asks for this).

Step 5 — Review Your Order and Pay

The Review & Pay page shows your full order summary:

The extra $2 is a cost recovery fee that supports the Texas.gov platform — it goes to the state, not a third party.

Accepted payment methods: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

⚠️ Important: Refunds are not processed once the Driver Record is requested. Double-check your order before submitting.

When everything looks right, complete payment.

Step 6 — Print or Email Your Record

After payment, you'll have the option to print your record immediately or have it emailed to you. Either way, you'll receive a certified PDF.

Keep this document — you'll submit it to the court along with your Hip Hop Driving completion certificate.
